Outside Reading #5: Sinning Boldly vs Costly Grace

Martin Luther encouraged believers to "sin boldly" as a means of being open and honest within confession leading them to do good works.  This is often misconstrued to mean that Luther encouraged Christians to be bold in the way that they sin but the real meaning of the statement is in reference to confession in which opens dialogue for believers in sin to repent openly and change their ways.  Bonhoeffer's "costly grace" is something one could incorrectly pit against Luther's concept of sinning boldly saying that costly grace would not let someone sin boldly.  This again pairs with the misunderstanding of the phonetic language Luther uses considering Bonhoeffer would want this concept of sinning boldly to be present in confession because that leads to repentance only called from costly grace.
