Space Trilogy #1: Ransom's Resilience

I resonate with Ransom’s dismay, disillusion, and confusion upon being caught up in the “adventure.” Such peril did he endure in the journey across the cosmos, only to be left to his own devices, and running for his life on a strange planet. Directionless, breathless in the heavy alien atmosphere, and desperate for assurance that he would breathe on Earth again.
I respect Ransom’s determination and intentionality. Despite being left for dead by his captors, he cautiously continues surviving. He scrounges for food and eventually makes a friend. He is astoundingly patient, with himself and with the creatures he befriends, that a communication is born of troublesome linguistic troubleshooting. He slowly abandons strong ethnocentric ideals, and this earns him an honorary place among the hyossi. His arrogance gives way to understanding and a protective nature towards his saviors. What I hope to glean from Ransom’s character is his incredible resilience. Most people would consider resorting to drastic measures, should they endure Ransom’s abduction, captivity, and threat of death. Ransom does not allow the plight of the moment to rob him of hope.
