Til We Have Faces Entry #1: How to Love

I've been pondering our conversation from Tuesday on how one can handle the situation discussed from the book regarding the dilemma between ruining a relationship and potential death of a friend.  I personally, while I find the argument that the person threatening their own life not showing the other person love compelling and probably true, if you love someone you should prioritize keeping their lives.  If one looks at the situation with a deontic notion that all people should not die under any circumstance, then you have to prioritize the life of someone.  People are generally understanding and if you talk to the person with the relationship in jeopardy after handling the other situation, they ought to understand your reasoning and the relationship can heal from that.  People generally live under this deontic imperative that life is to be preserved and death is bad thus them getting that perspective in hindsight should allow for them to understand and mend the relationship that was harmed from the situation.
